Durango boys lacrosse upstaged in Utah

Durango lacrosse goes 0-2 on trip

Offensive picked up Saturday, but the defense couldn’t match the effort.

The Durango High School boys lacrosse team lost for the second time in as many days to open the season Saturday in Utah. After falling 13-5 at Riverton on Friday, the Demons lost 12-9 at Lehi on Saturday.

“We’re putting it together but still looking for that first win,” DHS head coach John Robinette said. “I saw some improvement for sure, so that’s a moral victory. But we were up in some areas and down in others.”

Kyle Robinette and Jackson Steigelman led the Demons’ attack with three goals each. Robinette added one assist and led the team with six groundballs. Steigelman added five groundballs.

Jeb Steigelman scored two goals and added one assist, and Oaken Oles had one goal.

The Demons dominated faceoffs, winning 16-of-21, with Easton Verduzco winning 14-of-18.

Andrew Brown made two saves and gave up eight goals in the first game. Freshman goalie Dylan Gaver went between the pipes in the second half and made five saves while allowing four goals.

“We put a few more goals together and executed better on that end, but the team and individual defense still is not up to par, and we’re trying to figure out our goalie situation,” coach Robinette said.

The Demons (0-2) face a big week of action, as they will travel Wednesday to Alamosa for a neutral-field game against Pueblo West before hosting Vail Mountain at 4:30 p.m. Friday and defending champion Aspen on Saturday.
