Durango City Council delays hearings on affordable housing

On Tuesday, the Durango City Council delayed two public hearings on policies meant to encourage affordable housing.

Two potential steps to encourage affordable housing were delayed by the Durango City Council on Tuesday.

For months, councilors have been discussing the need for a law to help protect condominium builders and change fees builders pay in lieu of building affordable and attainable housing.

Both measures were set for public hearing Tuesday, but both hearings were reset to different dates. The hearings were part of an initial lineup of nine hearings.

Councilor Dick White asked for the ordinance that could protect condo builders from lawsuits be reset because not enough information about it was provided on the city’s website.

“You can’t have a public hearing without the public knowing what you are talking about,” he said.

The staff did not have enough time to prepare the information, said Greg Hoch, director of community development.

The hearing on a law that will offer protection to builders has been reset to April 5.

A hearing on changes that will be made to the fair share ordinance was reset to May 3.

City staff asked for this hearing to be reset.

The city also received a letter from the Home Builders Association of Southwest Colorado with a list of concerns about the ordinance.

City staff members plan to meet with representatives of the home building community before the hearing on fair share law, Hoch said.
