Bayfield boys and girls track & field have strong showing at Viking Invite

Wolverines get four winners total

The Bayfield High School track and field team had a big showing at the Viking Invitational in the San Luis Valley at Center High School when the Wolverines took second place for both the boys and girls teams.

The girls team scored 90 points, while the boys team totaled 83. Salida won both the boys and girls competitions. The girls had 109 points, and the boys had 92.

Buena Vista took third in the girls with 62 points while John Mall took third in the boys with 71.

Bayfield’s top performer was Brian Mashak, who took first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.44 seconds. He also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.4 seconds.

Amber Johnson took first place for the girls team in the 200 with a time of 28.97 seconds. Johnson was also apart of the girls 4x200-meter relay team that came in first with a time of 1 minute, 53.67 seconds. Isis Gonzales, Courtney Bayles and Bridget Goddard rounded out Bayfield’s relay team.

Katie Hawkins took first in Bayfield’s only win in the field events. Hawkins won the pole vault with a jump of 8 feet, 6 inches. Maddi Foutz took second with a jump of 7-0.

The Bayfield boys 4x800 team took second place when the team of Alex Knight, Cody Speece, Sloan Mazur and Brandon Stuever ran a time of 9:19.73. Salida’s team of Morgan Fitzgerald, Seth Minor, Kadan Sites and Taylor Stack took first with a time of 9:05.85.

Carl Heide ran a 17.66 in the 110-meter hurdles, which was good enough for second place. Cooper Eggleston of Buena Vista took first with a time of 17.36.

Heide also took second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 44.3 seconds. Gallian Roberts of Salida took first with 41.55.

Bayfield’s boys 4x400 relay team of Jesse Westbrook, Josh Westbrook, Brandon Stuever and Ethan Tate took second with a time of 3:53.61. Centauri’s team of Jayden Gomez, Michael Sowards, Brandon Middlemist and Dustyn Sowards took first with a time of 3:49.60.

Bridget Goddard took second with a time of 2:35.6 in the 800 for Bayfield, as Salida’s Taryn Ceglowski took first with 2:33.93.

Bayfield’s Tymbree Florian took second in the girls long jump with a jump of 15-11½. Florian also took third in the 100 with a 13.84 run. Sangre de Cristo’ Sarah Storey took first with a jump of 16-00½.

Bayfield’s Sam Westbrook took third place in the shot put with a throw of 44-4¾. Bayfield’s team of Jesse Westbrook, David Hawkins, San Kundrick and Jaden Vitagliano took third in the 4x100 relay team with a time of 48.61.

Isis Gonzales took third place in the 400 with a time of 1:05.21 for Bayfield. The team of Caibri Schaefer, Shaylea Freier, Tori Tate and Florian took third in the 4x100 relay team with a time of 58.13.

Bayfield will be back on the track when the Wolverines travel to Cortez on March 25.
