Durango track and field team strong in Farmington

DHS track sees exceptional performances
Durango’s Bekah Moenning took first in the girls long jump with 15 feet, 9½ inches.

The Durango High School track and field team sprung into action over the weekend in competition at the Farmington Invitational where 19 schools collided for fierce athleticism.

The Demons saw three first-place finishes from the girls field team as Bekah Meonning won the long jump with 15 feet, 9½ inches, Jessica Lee won the pole vault with a jump of 8 feet, 6 inches and Brean Hawman took the shot put with a throw of 33 feet, 11 inches.

Hawman also took third in the discuss with a throw of 105 feet, 0 inches.

“What excites me about this team is that is our throwers and jumpers are excelling greatly,” said Durango head coach David McMillan in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “We’re in good hands, we have good kids in the program with good young coaches. The theme of the meet was exceptional performances.”

Long distance runner Abby Scott narrowly took second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 29.89 seconds. Aztec’s Elana Kresl barely edged Scott to won the event with a time of 2:29.86. Scott then took third in the 1,600 with 5:42.58. Farmington freshman McKinzey Allee won the event with a time of 5:37.45.

On the boys side, David Moenning took second in the 800 with a time of 2:06.17. Zuni High’s Ryan Bowekaty took first with a run of 2:05.83.

In the 1,600, Benjamin Lachelt took second place for the Demons with a run of 4:41.81. Danny Hickman of Farmington took first with 4:39.80.

The team of Paxton Scott, Ben Bates, Bryan Dunlop and Dylan Baken took second in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:41.50.

Farmington took first with its relay team with a time of 3:38.66.

Orion Clay took second in the high jump when he leapt 5-10. Clay was also impressive in the javelin, throwing for 117-8, which was good enough for seventh.

“For a kid to come off the basketball court is pretty exceptional,” said McMillan. “We’re pretty impressed with (Clay). Overall, I was impressed with all our young athletes and young coaches.”

Braden Evans took third in the boys discuss with a throw of 121-2.

Also competing at Farmington was Ignacio High School. Senior Chrystianne Valdez came in third place in the pole vault with a jump of 7-6. Junior Bryan Gram came in fourth in the 400 with a time of 55.15.

Up next for Durango is the Mickey Dunn Invitational on April 2 at Grand Junction.
