Inaugural Durango Half Marathon set for July 2

Fast feet and fireworks will headline Fourth of July weekend in Durango.

The inaugural Durango Half Marathon will be held July 2. More than 500 runners and walkers are expected to attend the event, said Will Newcomer of Gravity Play Sports, the event organizer.

The race will start and finish at Animas Valley Elementary School, running in a clockwise direction.

Registration opened March 15 and will be open until May 1. The cost of entry is $69. If slots remain after May 1, the price will increase.

The race will benefit the San Juan Mountain Association.

There will be four aid stations along the route in the Animas Valley. The course is described as relatively flat with only 561-feet of elevation gain and loss.
