Storm hits mountains, mostly misses Durango

Another storm coming to San Juans on Monday night

It wasn’t a blizzard like the Front Range endured this week, but Durango did see snow on and off before the storm moved out Saturday evening.

For folks headed out on spring break, U.S. Highway 160 from the Four Corners to Pagosa Springs was wet in areas, the Colorado Department of Transportation reported as of 5:30 p.m. Saturday. It was snowing on Wolf Creek Pass, with roads icy and snow-packed. U.S. Highway 550 north of Durango was icy in spots, with snow, icy and snow-packed roads on Coal Bank, Molas and Red Mountain passes.

Purgatory Resort reported 4 inches of snow in the last 24 hours as of Saturday afternoon.

It snowed heavily most of the day Saturday at Wolf Creek Ski Area. The area reported receiving 17 inches of snow in the previous 24 hours as of Saturday afternoon. Silverton Mountain reported 4 inches in the previous 24 hours and 18 inches in the previous 72 hours Saturday morning and hadn’t updated the report on Saturday afternoon.

“Monday night and Tuesday, there will be another storm coming through,” said Ben Moyer, a meteorologist with the Grand Junction office of the National Weather Service. “There won’t be much of anything in Durango again, but we’re predicting 9 to 10 inches in the mountains.”

Weaker chances of precipitation are possible Wednesday and Thursday, he said.
