Animas Valley brush fire is under control

Half-acre blaze controlled Wednesday afternoon

Firefighters responded Wednesday afternoon to a half-acre brush fire in the Animas Valley north of Durango.

The fire was reported about 2:50 p.m. in the 8000 block of East Animas Road (County Road 250).

No structures were threatened, but the blaze did involve two separate properties, said Karola Hanks, fire marshal with the Durango Fire Protection District.

Aided by winds, the fire headed toward an irrigation ditch with plenty of water, she said. It was under control by 4:20 p.m.

The cause remained under investigation, but it appears to have been started from an agricultural burn that went out of control, Hanks said.
