Woman arrested after sending car into Animas

A woman who drove a truck into the middle of the Animas River early Sunday morning was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

Around 2 a.m., Durango police responded to a report of a Toyota pickup in the Animas River off U.S. Highway 550/160, north of Santa Rita Park, said Cpl. Brian Heaton.

“It (the car) was in the middle of the Animas,” Heaton said. “Probably halfway submerged. It probably took some creative tow truck work.”

The female driver was found nearby with her clothes soaked, Heaton said, and investigating officers found probable cause to charge her with driving under the influence of alcohol.

Heaton did not disclose the name of the driver, but said she sustained no serious injuries.
