Friends of the Arts to meet on Thursday

Durango Friends of the Arts, an all-volunteer nonprofit organization, will host a general membership meeting on Jan. 21.

A social will be held at 10 a.m., followed by the meeting at 10:30 a.m. at the Center for Southwest Studies at the Fort Lewis College

To RSVP, email kaischkmd@gmail.com prior to the meeting for courtesy parking permit. After the meeting, a self-guided tour, “Thunder in Our Voices,” will be available.

Fort Lewis College opens exhibition

The Center of Southwest Studies will open the exhibition, “Thunder in Our Voices,” on Thursday at the center at Fort Lewis College. An opening reception, free and open to the public, will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday. The exhibition covers the issue of oil and gas pipelines across indigenous lands and runs through May. Library celebrates this year’s Snowdown

Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave,, will celebrate Snowdown with these events:

Totally ’80s Button Making will take place from 3 to 4 p.m. Jan. 27. Participants can make an ’80s-themed button.

Cola Wars challenge will take place from 3 to 4 p.m. Jan. 29. There will be a prize drawing for a gift card to Home Slice Pizza.

Totally ’80s Preschool Dance Party will take place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Jan. 29.

People can vote for their favorite ’80s bands and musicians from Jan. 27 to 30 and can be entered into a prize drawing for an iTunes gift card.

Local author signs book deal

Local author Mandy Mikulencak recently received a two-book deal from Kensington Publishing.

“The Last Supper,” to be released in spring 2017, is about a young prison chef in 1959 Louisiana who dedicates her life to cooking for the men on death row as she falls in love with a stoic warden who knows the truth about her father’s murder, but doesn’t want his secret to ruin their relationship, or poison the memories of her father. Sweethearts of the Arts coming up

The Durango Arts Center hosts the 2016 annual Sweetheart of the Arts Benefit at 6 p.m. Feb. 4.

Each year, DAC celebrates “Sweethearts” who have made and continue to make noteworthy contributions benefiting the arts and the cultural fabric of the community. The 2016 Sweethearts Benefit will celebrate Meredith Mapel, Sandra Mapel and the artists/curators of the DAC-affiliated group Friends of the Art Library: Leesa Zarinelli Gawlik, Deborah Gorton, Louise Grunewald, Barbara Tobin Klema, Mary Ellen Long and Jane Steele. The event is a DAC’s annual fundraising soiree. The evening includes cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and sweets. Individual tickets are $60 for DAC members and $75 for non-members. Performing arts workshop to be held

The Durango Arts Center will hold its adult performing art Saturday Series featuring theatre specialists and working artist instructors teaching a range of performing arts techniques. Each Saturday Series workshop costs $34 for DAC members and $40 for non-members and runs Saturdays, January through April.

The winter session will begin with “On Communion: Acting Is Interacting – An Introduction to ‘Moscow Art Theatre’ Techniques” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 23. Participants will learn to apply to the Stanislavski’s method of communion and ensemble building developed by Slava Doglachev of the Moscow Art Theatre.

Music in the Mountains: jazz concert

Music in the Mountains will present A Bite of Jazz dinner and concert series, featuring “Better Knot” Neo-Celtic Ensemble on 5:15 p.m. Feb 3 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 910 East 3rd Avenue. The night begins with a baked potato dinner. Beer and wine will be provided.
