Go Fund Me set up for girl killed in crash

Mia Martinez

A Go Fund Me account has been set up for Mia Martinez, the 8-year-old girl who died Monday in a head-on car crash in southwestern La Plata County.

As of 11 a.m. Friday, the effort had raised nearly $2,000 of its $10,000 goal. Efforts to identify the person who created the site and how the money would be spent were not immediately successful Friday.

The crash occurred at 8:23 a.m. Monday on La Plata Highway (Colorado Highway 140) about 1.6 miles north of the Colorado-New Mexico border.

Mia’s mother, Neysha Candelaria, 32, of Durango was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Uplander north when she hit snow and ice and slid into the on-coming lane of traffic, colliding head-on with the 2009 Kia Sorento driven by Mindy Walck, 38, of Hesperus.

Candelaria had five children in her minivan, none of whom wore seat belts, according to the Colorado State Patrol. At least three children were thrown from the vehicle, including Mia.
