Durango girls lacrosse beats Telluride without goalie

Demons win without a goalie

The Durango High School girls lacrosse team used a unique tactic for its outpouring of goals Friday afternoon against Telluride.

The Demons played the entire game without a goalie and put an extra body in the field to claim a 20-4 win over the Miners at Durango High School.

Einfalt said playing without a goalie made his team play tougher.

“They were more aggressive because if they don’t stick tight then it’s easy for the ball to go in,” Durango head coach Jeff Einfalt said. “They knew they couldn’t slack off and let Telluride take shots. We didn’t have a goalkeeper, knowing that Telluride wasn’t going to be a threat”

Apparently, Einfalt made the decision to go without a goalie earlier in the week, which caused in-depth game planning.

“One of the reasons why we went that route is because it puts pressure on us. It’s what we’re supposed to be doing,” Einfalt said.

Durango (3-7, 1-7 Mountain League) got eight goals from Joie Raybourn, and Shilo Gillen scored two goals and recorded four assists.

“Raybourn was instrumental in controlling the game at midfield,” Einfalt said.

Jazelyn Martinez and Addee Hansen had their first goals of the season.

Durango outshot Telluride 36-5.

Maria Jimenez went down with a concussion during the first half during a ball scrum. She was hit in the head with a stick and was taken off the field in an ambulance. Jimenez is doing fine, but her season is over.

The Demons will play Telluride again at 11 a.m. Saturday to wrap up the season.
