Fort Lewis College student teachers share lessons learned

Experience gained in leadership, personal strengths

When Fort Lewis College graduates its next group of teachers Saturday, the students will take with them knowledge about how to be effective in the classroom, as well as lessons learned about their personal strengths and leadership styles.

On Thursday, they will hold an exhibition to share what they have learned during their student-teaching stints in area schools.

“We believe anyone who comes will be inspired by the professionals the FLC Teacher Education Department has produced,” graduating senior Thomas Poole said, “and the work we have done as student teachers.”

The students will provide answers to one or both questions: What is my work? and Who am I as a teacher?

“This is a time for students to share artifacts, written reflections and discuss their growth as professionals,” Poole said. ‘“Come explore the new findings that are taking place in our schools in the region and in other parts of the country.”

While Durango School District 9-R has filled its teacher slots in recent years, other schools in Southwest Colorado and in rural Colorado overall have not been as fortunate, particularly when it comes to math- and science-certified teachers. Graduating a new class of licensed teachers adds to the pool of teachers who may fill some of those vacancies.
