Bayfield, Durango track and field teams finish 1-2 in Pine River Invitational

Wolverines’ boys 1st, girls 2nd at home

Ten schools touched down in Bayfield for the Pine River Invitational in Bayfield, welcoming Southern Colorado’s finest track and field athletes to test their meddle.

The Bayfield High School boys track and field team defended its home turf when it came in first place with 135 points. Durango came in second for the boys with 113 points, and Pagosa Springs took third with 89½.

Pagosa Springs won the girls competition with 128½ points, and Bayfield finished second with 115. Durango wasn’t far behind in third with 113 points.

Durango’s distance runners didn’t travel because they’re focusing on this weekend’s meet at Valor Christian in Denver.

This was the 14th year the Pine River Invitational has taken place at Wolverine Country Stadium. Previously, it was held at Ignacio High School.

Bayfield’s boys throwers had a nice day, sweeping the shot put and taking the top two spots in the discus.

Junior Sam Westbrook led the Wolverines when he took first with throws of 47 feet, 10 inches in the shot put and 136-00 in the discus

“I think it’s really good for our team as a whole and for our throwing team because it boosts moral, but it also allows us to have more confidence when we go to state,” said Westbrook, son of Kirsten and Mark Westbrook.

Sophomore Ryan Phelps took second in discus with a throw of 135-02 and third in the shot put with 41-00.5.

Freshman David Hawkins took second in the shot put with a throw of 41-03. Durango’s Braden Evans took third with a throw of 119-09.

Durango’s Breann Hawman took first place in both the girls discus and shot put.

“This is a young team,” said Durango head coach David McMillan. “Our throwers have been on fire as of late.”

Hawman discus throw of 109-05 edged Pagosa Springs’ Keena Murphy,. who threw 109-03, which was a personal record.

“I felt good; I would have like to have a better shot put mark because I’m really working to break the school record,” said Hawman, daughter of Charles and Vicki Hawman. “It’s coming along, though. I still threw a personal record (Wednesday).”

Hawman’s throw of 34-07.5 was the best of the day in the shot put, which was also a personal record. Fellow Durango teammate Alex Poulter took second with a throw of 31-11.

Coby Bear of Montezuma-Cortez took first in the boys long jump with a leap of 20 feet.. Elisha Vaquera, also of Montezuma-Cortez, took second with a jump of 19-11. Keshaun Duran of Monte Vista took third with a jump of 19-09.

In the girls long jump, Morgan Short of Montezuma-Cortez took first with a jump of 15 feet, 9 inches. Bayfield’s Tymbree Florian took second with 15-07.

In the boys pole vault, Durango and Bayfieldswept the top-four spots. Camden Garland and Dylan Baken of Durango took first and second, respectively. Garland won with a jump of 10 feet, 8 inches, and Baken had a jump of 10-02. Chad Winkler and Cash Snooks took third and fourth for Bayfield. Winkler jumped 10-02, while Snooks cleared 9-08.

In the girls pole vault, Jessica Lee of Durango took first with a jump of 9-02, Katie Hawkins of Bayfield took second with a jump of 8-08 and Shaylan Garrett of Durango finished third with 8-02.

For the boys high jump, Kendall Vance of Center took first with a jump of 5-09. David Lee of Durango jumped 5-07, which was good enough for second place. Snooks took third place in the high jump with a leap of 5-07. Dax Snooks of Bayfield took fourth with 5-01.

Ignacio’s Kelly Campbell took first in the girls high jump with a jump of 4-07.

In the girls 200-meter, Medina of Center took first in 27.36 seconds. Madeleine Foutz of Bayfield took second with a run of 27.72 and teammate Amber Johnson took third in 28.48.

In the boys 400, Durango claimed both of the top spots, as Seamus Millett and Christian Gonzales finished one and two. Millett had a time of 52.84 seconds, and Gonzales finished in 53.09. Ro Paschal of Mancos finished third with 53.15. Gus Roberts and Ethan Tate took third and fourth for Bayfield.

In the girls 400, Madison Lewis of Pagosa Springs took first in 62.06, Bridget Goddard of Bayfield took second in 65.25.

In the boys 110-meter hurdles, Bayfield’s Carl Heide was disqualified for a false start. That gave the field more leeway as Dolores took the top two spots with Cael McHenryand Tristan Medina.

“I was thinking too hard I guess,” Heide said about his disqualification.

Heide returned with a win in the 300 hurdles, as he finished in 43.06. Corbin Lyman of Durango took second in 44.13, and Adrian Hernandez (46.42) took third.

“I was focusing on not false starting again,” said Heide, son of Bayfield head coach Gary Heide and Candice Heide.

Bayfield took first in the 4x100 girls relay. The team of Shaylea Freier, Courtney Bayles, Florian and Madeleine Foutz had a time of 52.82.

In the boys 4x200 relay race, Center took first place with a run of 1:38.35. The team of Gus Roberts, Ethan Tate, Jesse Westbrook and Josh Westbrook took second place for Bayfield with a time of 1:38.66.

In the girls 100 hurdles, Weslie Kirks of Montezuma-Cortez took first in 16.58. Kathleeen Duft of Durango was second in 17.72..

In the boys 4x800 meter relay, Mancos took first with 8:42.78, and the team of Bayfield took second with a time of 8:47.42. Pagosa Springs was third, and the team of Coltin Gallegos, Will Meyer, Sam Dippold and Will Swenson took fourth for Durango with 9:17.88.

In the girls 800 medley, Dolores took first in 1:59.98 and Monte Vista came in second with 2:03.07. In third place, the Bayfield team of Isis Gonzales, Freier, Courtney Bales and Olivia Keitz ran in 2:05.00. The team of Rachel Cooper, Jaylynn Herrera, Azala Perez and Chrystianne Valdez of Ignacio took fourth with a time of 2:13.41.

In the 4x800, Pagosa Springs came in first place with a time of 10:56.06 while the Durango team of Sarah Smagacz Emily Edwards-Colsman, Elli Trussel and Marit May came in second with a time of 11:19.00.

Colton Gallegos of Durango took first in the 800 with a time of 2:12.61. Bayfield’s Sloan Mazur took second in 2:15.92.

In the girls 800, Jennyfer Kemper of Creede took first with a run of 2:41.82. Durango then rounded out the remaining places with Smagacz coming in second, Julia Peterson third Cecilia Compton fourth .
