Lipstick or not, pig may still smell

At a recent Durango City Council study session, I witnessed the presentation of the new $10 million utility administration building at Santa Rita Park. This project is being funded by city residents through the exorbitant fee increases to our monthly water and sewer bills.

The lead project engineer for the wastewater treatment plant stated that the no. 1 complaint heard from residents during public meetings is in regard to the odors coming from the existing sewage treatment plant. He said that he could not guarantee that there will never be any odor from the new plant. This is contrary to what city officials promised during public meetings regarding the wastewater treatment plant bond election last fall.

This extravagant utilities administration building will be the gateway to Durango’s wastewater whitewater park. It occurs to me that rather than trying to put lipstick on a pig, it would have been better to simply move the pig sty.
