Winter weather returns to mountains, passes

Winter weather and slick roads returned to parts of Colorado on Friday, including the San Juan Mountains.

The chain law for westbound U.S. Highway 160 on Wolf Creek Pass was lifted shortly after 1 p.m. Friday. It also has been lifted on U.S. Highway 50 on Monarch Pass.

But wintry driving conditions – snow, slush and icy spots – remain around much of the state.

A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 9 p.m. Friday for the San Juans, including the towns of Silverton, Telluride and Rico. The National Weather Service said up to 8 inches of snow could fall in those areas. To the east, the advisory remains in effect until midnight, with up to 10 inches of snow expected at higher elevations.

Colorado Department of Transportation cameras showed widespread snow and rain around Colorado by late Friday morning; a swatch of the central mountains and part of the Front Range are under a winter storm warning until midnight.

Durango residents can expect scattered showers Friday night and a mix of rain and snow through the weekend, with the greatest chance of precipitation on Sunday. Daytime high temperatures are expected to be in the low 50s.
