Durango baseball comes up just short against Grand Junction

Durango drops tough one to Grand Junction

It hasn’t happened very often this season, but Friday’s loss to Grand Junction is one Durango felt like it let get away.

The Demons committed four costly errors, including three in a row at one point, and left the bases loaded when the final out was committed, as Durango High School’s baseball team lost a 7-6 heartbreaker to Grand Junction. Andrew Selser did his part on the mound and helped himself at the plate. The senior threw 6 1/3 innings and allowed eight hits and five earned runs. He struck out six. He also went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.

Max Hyson finished 2-for-3 with two singles and two walks for Durango. Lawrence Mayberry went 2-for-3 with a single and a double, and Jake Bourdon went 2-for-3 with a home run.

“Our guys really battled the whole game, as hard as they could, and this was a tough one to lose,” Durango head coach Eric Baker said. “We had a chance at the end to win it and some chances to get out of innings without damage, but we didn’t make the big play or get the big hit.”

Both teams started strong and threatened to have big innings early, but a double play for Durango (8-7, 4-2 4A/5A Southwestern League) thwarted the Tigers’ threat, and the Demons only managed to score one in the first after loading the bases. Bourdon’s blast was matched by Tigers’ sophomore Zack Owens’ opposite field home run and it was clear that a few plays here and there would make the difference, as the two rivals were equally matched.

The pitchers settled into the middle innings with minimal damage, and the teams entered the seventh inning tied at 5. The Tigers (10-6, 5-2 SWL) had two runs cross home in the top half, and with one in and the bases loaded in the bottom half, Durango couldn’t get the timely hit it needed.

“We had a lot of kids step up big (Friday), which makes it that more disappointing that we couldn’t get the win,” Baker said. “Hopefully we can use it as fuel and come out (Saturday) with a little fire and get after them.”

Durango will host Grand Junction again at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
