Bayfield girls soccer ties Telluride

Duran finishes with two assists

The Bayfield High School girls soccer team received a surprise from Telluride on Friday afternoon when the Miners played the Wolverines to a draw.

The Wolverines got on the board first when Sophie Turner scored for Bayfield with the assist coming from Maddy Duran, who finished the game with two assists in the 2-2 draw.

The Miners scored on a penalty kick from Maria Carrasco to tie the game then took the lead 2-1 on a goal just minutes later from Kenzie Zaumseil. Bayfield’s Savannah Kaufmann got a pass from Duran to score the Wolverines’ second goal.

For Bayfield (6-2-2, 6-1-2 3A Region 5 League), the shots were there, but the ball couldn’t find the back of the net.

“We hit side bar, cross bar, you name it,” said Bayfield head coach Jen Zelinski. “We played so hard and so well, they deserved it. It just didn’t fall our way. It’s pretty unfortunate; they’re disappointed. It was the best game I saw us play on defense for sure.”

Carrasco earned a red card in the first overtime period, but the Wolverines couldn’t capitalize playing a girl up.

Telluride (7-2-2, 6-1-2 3A Region 5 League) tied Bayfield 1-1 in its last meeting in March 25.

“We played great, we out-hustled them,” Zelinski said. “We played so well, the shots just didn’t go in goal.”

Bayfield will continue its road trip with a match at Ridgway (6-4-1, 5-4-1 3A Region 5 League) at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ridgway High School.
