Durango girls soccer scores five goals on senior day against Grand Junction Central

Durango turns attention to Grand Junction next

Celebrating senior day during the penultimate home game of the season, the Durango High School girls soccer team got a glimpse of their future.

The Demons scored four goals in the first half and cruised to a 5-0 victory Friday against the Grand Junction Central Warriors at Riverview Park.

“We did what we were supposed to and did it well,” DHS head coach Dalon Parker said.

Senior Madeline Robertson opened the scoring for Durango, and fellow senior Lauran Morrissey followed with a goal of her own off a corner kick. Parker said junior Lane Arnwine then broke out of a scoring funk with a goal to make it 3-0.

DHS junior Livi Curmano capped off the first-half scoring with the team’s fourth goal.

In the second half, DHS received a goal from a recent junior varsity call up in Caroline Knight.

The Demons honored seven seniors during Friday’s festivities, as Chloe Ciotti, Sydney Mattox, Morrissey, Ruth Quisenberry, Robertson, Leah Stevens and Sarah Waller were all recognized.

Mattox and Stevens shared time at the goalkeeper position. Stevens didn’t have to make a save, but Parker said Mattox made two or three.

“It really was about our shape,” Parker said of his team’s superior formation. “I think (Grand Junction Central) was expecting to play a lot of big balls over the top on us. We worked this whole week on possession and finding more ways to be dynamic, and the girls did it.”

Robertson’s big free kick helped open up the offense, and DHS controlled the game at midfield from there on out.

DHS will finish the home schedule at 11 a.m. Saturday at Riverview Park.

“I would expect the same thing we did (Friday),” Parker said. “Grand Junction is (0-7) in league, not doing too well. Those are the type of games I don’t want players going in thinking it will be a walk in the park. I expect us to maintain discipline and shape and show superior fitness.”
