Durango School District hires new finance director

Jennifer Macho-Seekins is Durango High graduate

Durango School District 9-R has hired its new finance director, and she has Durango roots.

Jennifer Macho-Seekins will officially begin her new post July 1, but she will be back and forth from her current job as finance manager for Waldo Community Action Partners in Maine as the district puts its 2016-2017 budget together. The board is scheduled to vote on the budget in May, and she plans to be in Durango for that meeting.

Macho-Seekins graduated from Durango High School in 1997 and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Denver.

“I’ve been on the Front Range and Maine since I graduated from DHS,” she said. “I’ve worked in both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors.”

Macho-Seekins will fill a 9-R position vacated by Jason Austin at the end of March. He has continued on a part-time basis to put the budget together. Carla Hotter will serve as interim finance director until July.

The tax increase request on the November ballot and the loan to remodel the Durango High School stadium and Escalante Middle School track that the 9-R school board approved Tuesday will both merit attention, Macho-Seekins said.

“I’m looking forward to getting to know different principals and different departments, to see what their needs are,” she said. “Are they getting the funding they need to run efficiently? Are there efficiencies they may not have thought about? Are there things on their wish list? And I want the accounting department to be visible and seen as a service department by the whole school district.”

The only child of Durango residents Nancy and Derrill Macho, she has two daughters, aged 2½ and 7 months. She was involved in theater at DHS and wants to do community theater and sing with the Durango Choral Society when she returns.
