Durango, Bayfield track competes in Grand Junction

Ignacio boys win in New Mexico

The Durango High School and Bayfield High School track and field teams traveled to Grand Junction over the weekend to compete in the Central Warrior Invitational as the Durango’s boys finished fourth while the girls’ team came in sixth place.

Bayfield’s boys took sixth and the girls took 11th.

The Demons’ 4x800 squad of William Chandler, Benjamin Lachelt, Seamus Millett and David Moenning was better than the rest by a wide margin. The group finished nine seconds ahead of the second place Fruita Monument team to win with a speedy time of 8 minutes, 7.33 seconds, and is now third in the 4A Colorado High School Activities Association rankings.

Moenning racked up another win in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.67 and Chandler’s 4:37.96 time was good for a second place finish in the 1600-meter race. Nicholas Turco was third in the 3200 in 9:57.03, with Millett taking sixth (10:10.80) and Jordan Helms finishing seventh (10:13.72).

Top hurdler Vicente Jimenez finished sixth in the 300-meter hurdles in 0:42.87, while Corbin Lyman and Kaleb McMunn ran season bests. Jimenez also took seventh in 110-meter hurdles.

The Durango girls’ team was led by the winning 4x400 relay team of Kathleen Duft, Teagan Garand, Bekah Moenning and Abby Scott. Their time of 4:07.08 vaults them to sixth in CHSAA’s 4A ranks, while the girls’ 4x800m squad of Moenning, Scott, Anna Smagacz and Maggie Wigton finished third.

Individually, Scott finished with a time of 2:24.55 to win the girls’ 800-meter by less than a second. Duft finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles in :50.33 and fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (0:17.29), while Garand’s 0:13.47 time in the 100-meter added a sixth-place finish.

Senior Adams State commit, Bree Hawman, placed second and third in the shot put and discus throw, while sophomore Alex Poulter threw her way to fifth place in both throwing disciplines as well.

Bayfield’s Ryan Phelps took sencond place in the discus with a throw of 135 feet, 10 inches. Carl Heide took fourth in both the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.13 seconds and the 300 hurdles with 42.49.

The girls 4x100 relay team of Tymbree Florian, Maddi Foutz, Shaylea Freier and Amber Johnson took fourth with 52.95 seconds.

Junior Sam Westbrook took fifth place in the shot put with a throw of 44-10.75, and discus with a throw of 127-07. The girls 4x200 meter relay team of Bridget Goddard, Florian, Foutz and Johnson also took fifth with a run of 1:52.19.

In the boys 4x800, Bayfield’s team of Alex Knight, Sloan Mazur, Cody Speece and Brandon Stuever took sixth with a time of 8:41.39. Goddard took sixth in the girls 800 with 2:30.88. Johnson also took sixth in the 300-meter low hurdles with 51.91 seconds.

The girls 4x400 relay team of Isis Gonzales, Goddard, Foutz and Johnson took sixth with a time of 4:32.02.

Rounding out Bayfield was the boys 4x400 team of Heide, Gus Roberts, Speece and Ethan Tate who finished seventh with a time of 3:37.99. Mikayla Barnes had a seventh place finish in the girls shot put with a throw of 31-6.5.

Ignacio competes in Bloomfield

The Ignacio High School boys and girls track and field teams competed in the 58th annual Bloomfield Invitational in New Mexico over the weekend.

With 11 New Mexico schools at the track meet, Ignacio and Dolores were the only two Colorado schools that attended so the Bobcats and Bears competed their scores against each other.

The Bobcats beat the Bears on the boys side, 4-2. The Ignacio girls, however, lost 5-0.

Sophomore Natoni Cundiff was responsible for Ignaico’s four points when he threw 120 feet, 11 inches in the discus. Cundiff’s throw placed him third in the overall standings against New Mexico’s field, and first against Dolores.

Along with discus, Ignacio had two other wins against Dolores. Sophomore John Valdez won the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.82.

Bryan Gram then won the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.83.

Dolores’ Cael McHenry ran 43.63 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles, which gave the Bears their one point. McHenry’s time put him sixth overall at the event.

In the girls events, Dolores scored its five points when Aryelle Wright ran 1 minute, 2.57 seconds in the girls 400. Wright’s time placed her third overall.

Ignacio got wins in the high jump, pole vault and shot put against Dolores. Kelly Campbell jumped 4 feet, 8 inches in the high jump, Lea Monroe jumped 7-0 in the pole vault and Alan Watts threw 28-4.5 in the shot put.
