Durango High Student Council is golden

Dale Garland, who advises the Durango High School Student Council, has helped the council win its seventh National Gold Council of Excellence Award for 2016, one of 230 student councils in the country to achieve the designation.

For the seventh year, the Durango High School Student Council has received a National Gold Council of Excellence from the National Association of Student Councils.

This makes the council one of 10 in Colorado and 230 nationwide granted the designation. The award measures a record of leadership, service and activities that improve not only the high school, but also the Durango community.

“Once you have developed this strength, it becomes a legacy, and it’s easy to bring people up to this level,” said teacher Dale Garland, who has been the adviser to the council for 19 years. “We get a lot of support from (Durango School) District (9-R) and Miss (Leanne) Garcia (DHS principal), too.”

The gold gives stature to DHS, he said.

“It really elevates the profile of DHS statewide in terms of student leadership,” Garland said. “We see it when we go to conferences, that we’re a model for a lot of schools around the state.”
