550/160 intersection set to go with the flow

Westbound 160 turn lane going live Monday
The Colorado Department of Transportation is reconfiguring the U.S. Highway 550/160 intersection near the DoubleTree Hotel.

Transportation officials said they are ready to open a new lane at the U.S. Highway 550/160 intersection.

Colorado Department of Transportation workers have worked for months at the DoubleTree intersection installing a continuous-flow intersection and plan to open the continuous flow left-turn lane between 8 and 9 p.m. Monday night.

The new left-turn lane goes from northbound Highway 550 onto westbound Highway 160. Traffic will cross over at the new signal, which is about 500 feet south of the DoubleTree Hotel intersection traffic signal.

The $6 million project, which started in March, is focused on relieving congestion and improving safety at the DoubleTree intersection and redesigning the intersection of College Drive and Camino del Rio.

Improvements include safety measures for pedestrians and bicyclists, such as islands with raised crosswalks for foot traffic, green bike-lane markings and bicycle-detecting traffic signals.

CDOT said travelers should expect a full northbound lane closure of Camino del Rio between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Monday night while crews move the barrier and switch the traffic signal.

Drivers also should expect single lane closures or lane shifts in both directions on Highway 160 west of DoubleTree intersection, and north and southbound on Camino del Rio south of College Drive.
