Ignacio girls third, two boys win at district track and field meet

Boys finish 6th; Cundiff, Smithson win events

The Ignacio High School boys and girls track and field teams hosted the San Juan Basin League meet Tuesday. The girls team totaled 61 points, which was good enough for third place. The boys scored 25 points for sixth place.

Telluride and Dolores came in first and second, respectively, in the girls competition.

Lean Monroe took first for Ignacio in the girls pole vault event. She vaulted 7 feet, 9 inches. Ignacio swept the event, as Chrystianne Valdez took second with 7-3, and Rachel Cooper placed third at 5-9.

Kelly Campbell of Ignacio and Shavargus Noyes of Dolores both jumped 4 feet, 7 inches in the high jump, but Noyes was awarded the win. Kiana Valdez of Ignacio took third with a jump of 4-5.

Azala Perez took second in the 100-meter dash for Ignacio when she finished in 13.42 seconds. Aryelle Wright of Dolores took first in 13.19 seconds. Perez also took second place behind Wright in the 200 when Perez finished in 28.48 seconds. Wright finished in 27.81 seconds.

Alana Watts took third in the shot put with a throw of 28 feet, 8 inches. Taylor Sickels of Nucla took first with a throw of 30-8, and Stephanie Ragsdale of Telluride took second with 29-0. Briana Duran took 15th with a throw of 20-6, and Rosaleigh Conception threw 20-0.

Rachel Cooper took seventh for Ignacio in the 800-meter run with a time of 3:02.79.

Conception took 12th in the discus with a throw of 61-7, and Duran took 13th with a throw of 57-6.

On the boys side, Colten Smithson and Natoni Cundiff were Ignacio’s only winners. Smithson took first in the pole vault with a jump of 8-0. Cundiff took first in the discus with a throw of 117-2.

Mancos ended up winning the competition with Telluride and Dolores coming in second and third, respectively.

Cundiff took fourth in the shot put with a throw of 34-8. Mitchell Neil took 12th with a throw of 32-7.

John Valdez took ninth in the boys 100 with a run of 12.55 seconds. Valdez also took sixth in the 200 with a time of 26 seconds. Valdez rounded out the 400 with a seventh-place finish in 58.68.

Ignacio will hit the road Saturday to Pagosa Springs High School for the Terry Allen Invitational. The meet will begin at 9 a.m.
