Bayfield girls soccer mean against Alamosa Moose

Bayfield soccer closing in on playoffs

The Bayfield High School girls soccer team got a big game right before the end of the season.

The Wolverines put up a 10-0 win Tuesday at home against the Alamosa Mean Moose in a game that was called with 15 minutes left in regulation because of the mercy rule.

“We just wanted to continue the momentum,” said Bayfield head coach Jen Zelinski. “We played really well against Telluride and Center, and I wanted them to keep playing the way they were playing. They were excited to play.”

Bayfield beat Alamosa in a tight 1-0 game April 5. In that game, Bayfield played well but had problems capitalizing on opportunities.

“I didn’t want to run up the score, but they needed momentum in order to get ready for playoffs,” Zelinski said.

Bayfield (8-2-2, 8-1-2 3A Region 5 League) had no problems Tuesday converting goals. By halftime, the Wolverines were up 7-0.

Senior Maddy Duran and sophomore Savannah Kaufmann each had three goals. Duran added two assists for good measure. Duran’s three goals gave her a team-leading 16 for the year. Kaufmann also had an assist.

Even though Alamosa (5-8, 3-7) wasn’t at full strength because of suspended players, Bayfield played as if it were a playoff game.

“The whole team has stepped up and played aggressive,” Zelinski said.

Makenna Cowan had two goals and an assist, Lenka Dosckocil had one goal and an assist, Bryannah Isiordia had one goal. Misty Helton had two assists and Taelor Higgins and Sydney Milner each had one assist.

Bayfield will host Ignacio (0-9, 0-9) to close out the regular season at 4 p.m. Friday at Wolverine Country Stadium. Ignacio fell 10-0 to Telluride in a game played Tuesday in Cortez.

“We need to come out hard and hope to continue the momentum,” Zelinski said. “We need to keep the spirits high and come out and focus on playing our game.”
