Durango High School students shine in Nashville

Paxton Scott, a member of the Durango High School DECA Club, presents his report about increasing employee engagement to Kristin Polens, clinical director of early interventions at Pediatric Partners of the Southwest in February. Paxton and his partner, Abby Scott, came in 13th out of 194 teams last week in the marketing communications competition at the International Career Development Conference in Nashville, Tennessee.

They may hail from a small town, but the DECA members from Durango High School played outside their weight class at the national finals in Nashville, Tennessee, last week.

Previously known as the Distributive Clubs of America, the club is an organization for emerging business leaders.

Three DHS teams made it into the Top 20 finals at the organization’s International Career Development Conference.

Mason Stetler and Jared Webster came in second out of 183 teams for their project, The Demon Deli. Joaquin Valdez, Charles McClung and Tanis Yoder were ranked 11th out of 188 teams for their independent business plan, Grizzly Peak Mountaineering. And Paxton Scott and Abby Scott came in 13th out of 194 teams as a marketing communications team.

The DECA adviser is David Dillman.

More than 18,000 students who were the winners or top finishers from 47 states and Canada attended the convention to compete.
