Hesperus man dies in overnight crash on Colorado Highway 140

Alcohol, excessive speed suspected in rollover

A Hesperus man died in a crash that was discovered Wednesday morning on the La Plata Highway (Colorado Highway 140) near the Colorado-New Mexico border in southwest La Plata County, authorities said.

The victim was identified as Wesley J. Hickman, 39.

The rollover crash likely occurred Tuesday night, said Capt. Adrian Driscoll with the Colorado State Patrol, though a more exact time of death may be determined by a coroner. Driscoll said a passer-by reported the crash around 8:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Driscoll said Hickman was driving a Ford F-150 with New Mexico plates south near mile post 1 when he apparently lost control on a curve, over-corrected, went across the on-coming lane and rolled off the embankment.

Driscoll said the truck rolled several times, and it was about 50 feet off the road in a natural runoff ditch.

The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the truck and found about 25 to 30 feet from the vehicle.

“We’re looking at excessive speed and alcohol,” he said.

The highway had intermittent closures until about 11:45 a.m. while troopers investigated the crash and removed the vehicle.
