Tyler Chatwood leads Colorado Rockies to shutout of San Diego Padres

Rockies pitcher lowers impressive away ERA

SAN DIEGO

Tyler Chatwood’s long road back from Tommy John surgery seemed a little shorter Wednesday.

Making his sixth big league start since his second elbow ligament operation, Chatwood pitched three-hit ball for eight innings to lead the Colorado Rockies over San Diego 2-0 on Wednesday. The Padres were shut out for the eighth time in 28 games this season.

“All the hard work that went into it and the people that were backing me, I owe it to them,” Chatwood said. “That is the biggest thing.”

Chatwood (4-2) struck out seven and walked one.

“When you think about the last couple of years for him it makes it even that much better,” Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. “But we always know what to expect as far as the mentality and aggressiveness. It’s fun to watch.”

Chatwood has thrown 24 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings on the road.

“He pitched to both sides of the plate very well,” Padres manager Andy Green said. “That’s kind of what the recipe is to pitch well, use the entire plate, the entire strike zone.”

Chatwood said once he established his fastball, he was able to expand his offerings.

“It all goes off my fastball command, and I had good command on both sides of the plate,” he said. “Then I was able to throw cutters and curveballs off of that.”

Jake McGee pitched a perfect ninth for his seventh save in eight chances, helping the Rockies win for just the seventh time in their last 27 games at Petco Park and avoid a three-game sweep.

Colorado went ahead in the fifth when Tony Wolters walked, took third on Chatwood’s single off the glove of shortstop Alexei Ramirez and scored when Christhian Adams grounded into a force.

DJ LeMahieu’s squeeze bunt scored Mark Reynolds in the ninth against Brad Hand.

Ramirez hit an inning-ended grounder in the seventh after Brett Wallace doubled with two outs and Melvin Upton Jr. walked.

“We didn’t create many opportunities to score, didn’t have a lot of chances,” Green said.

Rockies rumpus

Rockies INF Ben Paulsen was struck in the right forearm in the dugout during the game by a foul ball. X-rays were negative. ... LHP Chris Rusin (1-0, 1.69 ERA) will face San Francisco on Thursday night in his second start this season. He didn’t earn a decision Friday when he allowed one hit in five scoreless innings at Arizona.
