Public meetings on ADUs planned

Renting a secondary unit out of your home and facing thousands in city fees?

The city will be hosting a public information meeting Nov. 13 to answer residents’ questions and take feedback on the registration process for accessory dwelling units.

This meeting is only for residents who live in Established Neighborhood One, the area east of East Third Avenue and north of First Street, and Established Neighborhood Two, the avenue neighborhoods along North Main Avenue.

The city will cover recent changes on registering ADUs. In October, the Durango City Council chose not to impose fees on units that were built in the years proceeding 1989. Those built since then still have to pay up to $10,000 to legalize the unit.

The councilors also recently extended the deadline for registering ADUs from Dec. 31 to March 31.

A separate meeting on ADUs is planned for Animas City residents on Nov. 17. This will be the first meeting in a formal public process that will determine how ADUs will be handled in that neighborhood.

Both meetings will be held at 5:30 p.m. in council chambers, 949 East Second Ave.
