Say no to letting grocery stores sell wine

Wine at WalMart? I can’t imagine it. Seeing the bottles shuffled onto crowded shelves along with the Mountain Dew and Cheetos? And how has the wine been stored or transported? Both temperature and movement can alter the taste of wine.

I much prefer to visit my friends at The Wine Merchant, and I thank Eric for his recent opinion piece regarding the proposal to allow wine and beer sales in supermarkets and convenience stores. I sincerely hope that measure does not pass.

I love shopping at City Market, and they have some terrific employees there. I doubt, however, that they could consistently provide the knowledge and attention to my wine selection that I find at The Wine Merchant. I enjoy stopping by and asking Eric what wine will pair well with the pasta that I’m having for dinner. I love getting help from Lesley or Kathy choosing a gift wine for my co-worker or friend.

We have several independent wine and spirit shops in town, all with knowledgeable and passionate owners and employees. Please visit with them when you’re looking for a quality wine, craft beer, or even a nice single-malt Scotch.

The best bottle of wine is the one you’ve looked forward to all week, made even more special because of the care and attention it received before it reached your table. I guarantee you’ll enjoy it more than the mass-marketed mystery bottle you grab on the way out of a grocery store.
