Bayfield, Ignacio jump into big show at state track and field

Bayfield, Ignacio combine to send 26

Twenty-two Bayfield Wolverines and four Ignacio Bobcats have reached the ultimate stage of high school track and field.

Bayfield will bring a loaded team to the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 3A state track and field meet at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood this Thursday through Saturday. Meanwhile, Class 2A Ignacio has a small but strong squad ready to make a leap toward podiums.

Both squads are loaded with pole vaulters. Bayfield is also strong in the throwing events and relays, while Ignacio has a talented pair of sprinters.

Here is a closer look at those who will represent the two teams:

Emily Bauer

Bayfield High School

Grade: Junior

Events: Pole vault

Expectations: “I hope to go in and leave it all out there. I hope to keep accelerating, even if it’s only a couple inches.”

Colton Fine

Grade: Sophomore

Events: Pole vault

Expectations: “I’m looking forward to the experience to see what I can do when I’m older. I want to learn from my experience from the competition.”

Tymbree Florian

Grade: Freshman

Events: Long jump, 4x100 relay

Expectations: “For long jump, I’m expecting to get a personal record (which would beat her previous school record). For the 4x100 team, I think we can get really far with it.”

Madeline Foutz

Grade: Junior

Events: Pole vault, 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 relays

Expectations: “This year, it’s an expectation to make the podium. We want to win.”

Shaylea Freier

Grade: Freshman

Events: 4x100 relay

Expectations: “I’m expecting there to be a lot of people, but I want to be there for my team and help them win.”

Bridget Goddard

Grade: Junior

Events: 4x200, 4x400 relays

Expectations: “I hope to definitely get up on the podium.”

Isis Gonzales

Grade: Junior

Events: 4x200, 4x400 relays

Expectations: “I’m hoping to accomplish placing in the top 10.”

David Hawkins

Grade: Freshman

Events: 4x200 relay

Expectations: “I want to gain experience for the future. It will be something that will be cool for me next year.”

Katie Hawkins

Grade: Senior

Events: Pole vault

Expectations: “I’m just hoping to peak on the day at state and clear 9 feet, 3 inches.”

Carl Heide

Grade: Sophomore

Events: 110 high hurdles, 300 hurdles, 4x200, 4x400 relays

Expectations: “I want to get on the podium and get top six.”

Amber Johnson

Grade: Junior

Events: 300 hurdles, 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 relays

Expectations: “I’m pretty excited. I worked really hard this year, so I’m excited for that.”

Alex Knight

Grade: Junior

Events: 4x800 relay

Expectations: “We’re going to try our best and hopefully make the podium.”

Brian Mashak

Grade: Junior

Events: 100- and 200-meter, 4x200 relay

Expectations: “Hopefully I’ll do better than last year. I just want to compete.

Sloan Mazur

Grade: Sophomore

Events: 4x800 relay

Expectations: “We’re going to (get our personal record) with the drop in elevation.”

Ryan Phelps

Grade: Sophomore

Events: Discus

Expectations: “I don’t have many expectations, but my goal is to make the podium.”

Gus Roberts

Expectations: “I’m not expecting first, but I want to set a personal record.”

Cash Snooks

Expectations: “I was just happy to make it with it being my first year at pole vault. I want to jump the best I can.”

Expectations: “I’m excited to go out there for sure. I think we all are.”

Expectations: “I want to podium, for sure. I feel like we’re capable of getting on the podium.”

Expectations: “I want to try and get the school record.”

Sam Westbrook

Expectations: “I want to be on the top of the podium when the day ends. I expect to at least take second.”

Chad Winkler

Expectations: “With it being my first year, I want to get the lay of the land then jump back here next year and really try for some titles.”
