Durango High School baseball and lacrosse receive Southwestern League and CHSAA postseason awards

Robinette 2nd team All-State in lacrosse; 3 All-SWL first teamers in baseball

The seasons may be long over, but the Durango High School baseball and lacrosse teams received Southwestern League and Colorado High School Activities Association postseason honors this week.

Demons junior and lacrosse midfielder Kyle Robinette was named to the CHSAA 4A Lacrosse All-State Second Team. Robinette led Durango with 56 goals, a mark that was third most in the state’s 4A class.

With 131 ground balls corralled, the junior was second in CHSAA’s 4A ranks and is headed to Denver to play in Thursday’s 4A All-Star Game.

“If it was solely based on stats, I think Kyle should have made it,” Durango head coach John Robinette wrote in an email to The Durango Herald. “Maybe our scheduled wasn’t as strong as they would have liked, or maybe they like to go with seniors instead of juniors if it’s close. He’ll just have to work that much harder to get on the first team next year.”

That wasn’t it for the boys lacrosse team.

Senior Hank Muir was awarded the Zach Hills Award, an award given to one player who has demonstrated inspiration, courage and special commitment to the game of lacrosse.

The award was created in memory of Hills, a Colorado Academy lacrosse player, who died in a 2001 motorcycle accident.

The Durango baseball team had two seniors and a sophomore make the 5A/4A Southwestern League’s first team. Sophomore catcher Max Hyson was second on the team with a .431 batting average and also second with 25 hits.

Hyson was very reliable defensively behind the plate, and showed his athleticism by leading the team with five stolen bases.

Hyson was second in hits and average to senior, multi-sport talent Lawrence Mayberry. Mayberry led the Demons batting with .476 and his 30 hits were most for Durango’s offense. He also led the team in doubles (7), triples (3) and runs scored (27).

Durango ace Andrew Selser rounded out the Demons All-SWL first team selections.

Selser led the Demons with four wins on the mound, 40 strikeouts and 46 innings pitched.

The senior also hit .312 and was third on the team with 12 runs batted in.

Senior pitcher Dylan Carlson was named to the second team. Carlson struck out 36 batters in 40 innings pitched and was second on the team with three wins.

Fruita Monument’s Cuba Bess was named the SWL Player of the Year and Grand Junction’s first-year head coach Justin Little was named the league’s Coach of the Year.
