Car rolls onto Hillcrest Golf Course

A Mazda sedan traveling southbound Friday on Goeglein Gulch Road rolled over and came to rest at hole No. 15 at Hillcrest Golf Course. The driver and the passenger fled on foot. The driver was apprehended and taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center for shoulder injuries.

A rollover crash Friday evening landed a car on Hillcrest Golf Course in Durango.

The car came to rest on its side, near the tee box on hole No. 15.

“This ain’t the first rodeo at this tee box,” Hillcrest grounds supervisor Ken Kirby said. He said at least a dozen accidents have happened there over the years.

The driver was southbound on Goeglein Gulch Road, said Sgt. Will Sweetwood of the Durango Police Department.

“I don’t know why the driver went off the road,” he said. “Both of them (the driver and the passenger) tried to flee the scene, but the driver was too injured to run.”

The passenger did flee, and La Plata County Sheriff’s Office deputies assisted with the search in the SkyRidge subdivision, but did not find him, Sweetwood said. The driver didn’t identify the passenger.

“He hasn’t been too helpful,” Sweetwood said. “If his friend turns up seriously injured, that falls on the driver, too.”

Alcohol is suspected, but the investigation is in progress, Sweetwood said Friday evening.

The driver was transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center with what appeared to be a broken collarbone and dislocated shoulder.

“People weren’t very kind about having to go out of their way to get home,” Sweetwood said. “But we had medical personnel and officers on scene and had to close the road for everyone’s safety.”
