Police respond to hoax at Vantiv

Caller claimed a woman had a gun
A call Tuesday morning about a woman with a gun inside Vantiv’s building near Durango Mall proved to be false, according to police.

A caller claiming a woman was chasing someone into the Vantiv building with a gun proved to be a hoax Tuesday morning.

Durango Police officers and La Plata County Sheriff’s deputies cleared the building near the Durango Mall and determined there was no threat shortly before noon, said Lt. Ray Shupe, with Durango Police Department.

This kind of false reporting is illegal, Shupe said.

“If we can figure out who called in the hoax, we would be charging them with abusing the 911 system,” he said.

The call may have been made by someone who was upset with Vantiv, he said.

Mercury Payment Systems recently changed its named to Vantiv Integrated Payments because Vantiv bought the company.
