FLC joins partnership to promote health

Fort Lewis College has joined the Partnership for a Healthier America, which offers guidelines and programming for nutrition and physical activity.

This initiative will affect more than 1 million students, faculty and staff members on campuses across 29 states.

The partnership works with the private sector to fight childhood obesity.

In 2010, partnership was created in conjunction with – but independent from – first lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! effort.

Thyroid assessments available June 3

Dr. Nancy Utter will offer free thyroid consultations from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 3 at Durango Natural Medicine, 117 County Road 250.

The thyroid, known as the master gland of metabolism, controls the body’s ability to make energy. Poor thyroid function can cause fatigue, depression, weight gain, digestive problems and other health issues.

Workshop to explore healthy living June 4

The Women’s Resource Center will sponsor “Women Be Well” from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 4 in Durango.

The workshops will explore many different avenues of healthy living and being. From yoga and Reiki to beekeeping and genealogy research, these workshops are designed to expand participants’ worldview and connect them with like-minded women.

“Women Be Well” is put on by Joy Rides, an organization that promotes self-discovery through working with horses.

The organization offers private coaching as well as guided horseback retreats locally and overseas.

Cost is $85 with includes a lunch from Earth Girl Goodies. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the WRC.

EPA offers kit to raise asthma awareness

The Environmental Protection Agency is offering a kit to help state and local asthma programs hold events during Asthma Awareness Month.

The kit includes ideas and helpful tips for planning and running asthma events in schools, hospitals, clinics and more.
