A sign on the building, at 14929 Colorado Highway 172, says the doors are locked during normal business hours and asks visitors to knock for assistance or call the Growth Fund phone number.

An employee who answered the door would not confirm to The Durango Herald any reported threats or the nature of them.

A source who asked not to be named said it is because a Growth Fund employee made unspecified threats.

“I’m not aware of any specific threats to an employee; it’s a matter of administrative caution,” said tribal attorney Tom Shipps, who did not elaborate.

Calls to other Growth Fund employees and Southern Ute Tribal Police were not returned. Ignacio police officials said Growth Fund matters are handled by tribal police.

The Growth Fund is the tribe’s investment branch, which employs about 550 people and oversees oil and gas development and real estate ventures.
