Memorial Day ceremonies will honor those who gave lives for freedom

Today, we remember those who lost their lives fighting in the defense of this country and for what it stands. Wars have taken their toll, and continue to.

Americans continue to fight in Afghanistan and in Iraq, where it had been expected that they all would be home by now. The Taliban and other extremist groups have proved to be resilient, and Americans in small numbers are providing training and support while the two governments struggle to maintain order and to gain their footing.

To prevent complete collapse, the U.S. role in both countries may be required for some time. A third country, Syria, is next door and engulfed in even greater turmoil. There, the Americans’ role is only in the air, fortunately, but those pilots are at risk nevertheless.

Memorial Day was initiated in 1868 when flowers were placed on the graves of Union soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C., and early in the 20th century, it began to be recognized in cities and towns across the country.

In Durango, those who want to pay their respects today have choices. At 10 a.m., Vietnam veterans will gather at Iris Park along the Animas River at about Camino del Rio and 12th Street. At 11 a.m., veterans of all wars will be remembered at the memorial at the entrance to Greenmount Cemetery. At 11:45, those who lost their lives at sea will be remembered with a wreath placed in the Animas River from the Ninth Street bridge.

Beginning at noon, both the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post at 1550 Main Ave. and the American Legion Post at 878 East Second Ave. will host open houses.

Fly the American flag from your front porch and take in one or more of the day’s events. You will find yourself among like-minded community members who care about their country. At Greenmount Cemetery, visit the graves marked with a flag.

We will always remember those who have given their lives for their country, and we can hope that present and future governments will do their best not to let the number increase.
