Agriculture counts, locally and nationally

Agriculture is one of the oldest and most important professions. From the beginning of time, people have discovered methods to produce their own food, and since then, the methods have improved immensely to maximize efficiency and quality of the product.

On a large scale, the importance of efficient and sustainable agriculture becomes apparent as the world’s agricultural leaders work to feed the rapidly growing population. On a local scale, agriculture proves to be an integral part of the economy in La Plata County and an important resource for the community. Agriculture in La Plata County serves as the backbone for the booming hospitality industry prominent in the area and feeds the growing demand for fresh and local products.

Every year, thousands of tourists flock to La Plata County to experience the beautiful scenery, rich history, unique culture and charm of the area. On top of the charm, La Plata County is home to a plethora of locally owned and operated restaurants serving a wide variety of dishes. The local agriculture industry supports and serves the locally owned restaurants, which in turn serve the tourist population. The restaurants pride themselves on using local products in their food and proudly support the local farmers and ranchers. Without local agriculturalists to serve and cater to the restaurant owners and operators, the management would be forced to seek products from more distant sources, sacrificing the quality, freshness and value of their food.

Within the community itself, many people have voiced their support for local agriculture as a fresher, higher quality and healthier alternative to store-bought products. Farmers and ranchers in La Plata County serve as the supplier to feed the growing demand for locally produced meats and produce.

Forums like the farmers market highlight local agriculture, and local schools and businesses emphasize the use of locally produced products on their menus. With local buyers, farmers and ranchers do not need to spend as much transporting their products, while consumers enjoy a fresh, high-quality product, creating a symbiotic relationship between local agriculturalists and community members.

Local agriculture plays an invaluable role in La Plata County. It feeds the growing tourism industry and supplies the growing demand for local products. Beyond that, agriculture in La Plata County maintains the farming and ranching heritage and traditions of the area. Local farmers and ranchers provide a direct link to the deep agricultural roots of the area and help promote and preserve the agricultural heritage of La Plata County.
