Candlelight vigil in Durango to remember Orlando victims

Gathering will take place in Rotary Park
In remembrance of those killed at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, early Sunday morning, Brandon Caldwell, left, watches Stefan Park tie rainbow-colored ribbons to a tree along Main Avenue on Monday. A candlelight vigil will be held at 8:30 p.m. today in Rotary Park.

The

La Plata County Commissioner Gwen Lachelt and Durango Mayor Christina Rinderle will speak, and Eddie Box, a Southern Ute tribal member, will perform a blessing. Kevin Bell, with the Durango Choral Society, will sing.

Organizers of the vigil in Durango ask that participants bring their own water and candles.

Forty-nine people were killed early Sunday at an Orlando gay club after a lone gunman entered the bar and opened fire, interrupting an evening of drinking, dancing and drag shows at a club known for tolerance for all people.

Authorities say suspect Omar Mateen, carrying an assault-style rifle and a handgun, fired more than 50 rounds. He shot at police and he took hostages. When the gunfire at the Pulse Orlando club finally stopped, 50 people – including Mateen – were dead and dozens critically wounded in the deadliest mass shooting in recent U.S. history.
