Attempted carjacking caught on camera at south City Market

Police ask for public’s help in identifying man

The Durango Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying a man caught on video surveillance apparently trying to carjack someone near the entrance of south City Market in Durango.

The video shows the man trying to enter an occupied car about 4 a.m. June 6 at the grocery store, 6 Town Plaza.

The driver of the car is seen using her arm and leg to push the man away. He is then seen running away.

The man was caught on separate surveillance video about 45 minutes earlier at a gas station in town. He is described as a black man in his 40s with a slight beard, 5 feet 8-10 inches tall, and wearing a yellowish hoodie and shorts, said Deck Shaline, detective with the Durango Police Department. The back of his T-shirt appears to read “Hoffman,” which is possibly a construction company, Shaline said.

“We can only speculate about what the suspect was trying to do,” he said.

Anyone who recognizes the suspect is asked to call Crimestoppers at 247-1112 or Durango Police Detective Deck Shaline at 375-4729.
