Scenic highways help Colorado make Top 10 list

Colorado was ranked eighth in the nation for summer road trips, in part because of our skyways. And two are anchored in Durango, the San Juan Skyway and Tracks Across Borders.

The study evaluated the 50 states based on driving and lodging costs, road conditions and safety, and fun and scenic attractions.

The state’s crumbling infrastructure had us 20th on the second metric, but Colorado shone in others, including scenic byways and weather.

Oregon is apparently the best state for road trips, followed by Nevada, Utah, North Carolina, Minnesota, Washington and Idaho. Rounding out the top 10 are Louisiana and Vermont. Ranking 50th on the list is Connecticut.

So, Nevada not only beat Colorado – but comes in second? While it had the lowest rate for camping, Nevada came in 46th on both most car thefts per capita and fewest national park units per square mile. Must be the nightlife options that killed it, because, hey, Las Vegas and Reno.
