Music in the Mountains kicks off July 8

Chamberfolk group Harpeth Rising will be the first performance of the 30th season of Music in the Mountains.

The 30th annual Music in the Mountains season just around the corner.

The festival will officially open its season with the Harpeth Rising at the Bayfield Performing Arts Center.

You may be surprised to learn that there’s not a harp to be found in Harpeth Rising – the band, Jordana Greenberg on violin and vocals; Rebecca Reed-Lunn on banjo and vocals; and Maria Di Meglio on cello and vocals took their name from a river because “water is both dynamic and powerful,” they said on their website.

The trio of women blend newgrass, rock and classical music into a sound that is all their own.

“We don’t set out to create something different, we just write in a way that is true to ourselves while trying to always expand and explore the new influences in our lives,” Greenberg says on the band’s website. “We’re aware of genre divisions, we’re just not bound by them.”

Scheduling Harpeth Rising to play in Bayfield was a way to bring the area’s communities together, said Angie Beach, executive director of Music in the Mountains.

“Bayfield is perfectly situated between Pagosa and Durango, and we know there’s a huge folk music following, so we’re hoping Pagosa will drive part-way, and Durango will drive part-way and meet in the middle,” she said. “I think the Bayfield residents also really like this.”

And the Bayfield Performing Arts Center is a great venue, Beach said.

“Their asset of this new performing arts center is something special that I really want the community to realize is there,” she said. “There’s not a bad seat in the house.”
