Bayfield school superintendent facing health problems

Finance Director Amy Lyons to make decisions as needed

Just as the

On Tuesday, school board members approved his plan to appoint district Finance Director Amy Lyons to make decisions when Zabel is unavailable.

“As many of you are well aware by now, I am facing some significant health challenges that will at times impact my schedule and access to tend to school district business,” Zabel said in an email to Bayfield families Thursday. “I am extremely proud of the thoughtfulness and support that our Board has offered in establishing protocols to help guide us through the challenges we have been presented.”

Lyons’ lack of a background in education is offset by what she does know, he said.

“She deeply understands the workings of our district,” Zabel said, “and I’m confident that she will seek out the advice and counsel necessary to make the best decisions for the district. There are many critical initiatives happening throughout the district, but none is as critical as the work that our staff does with kids each and every day.”

Putting the bond issue on the November ballot was contingent on the district receiving an $8.56-million BEST grant from the Colorado Department of Education, a grant that was approved earlier this month. The funds would be used to build a new elementary school for grades three through five near Bayfield Middle School, as well as security upgrades and improved parking at Bayfield Elementary School, which will be used to house grades K-2.

Neither Zabel nor Lyons could be reached Thursday or Friday for comment.
