A wildfire near County Roads 116 and 105 in Hesperus was about 80 percent contained by 7 p.m. Saturday.

The fire began when lightning struck around 2:30 p.m. Saturday northeast of the intersection of the two roads and is on Southern Ute tribal land.

Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District Chief Chris Anderson estimated 10 to 15 acres burned and 50 people were working the scene with two single-engine fire tankers, a heavy air tanker and fire copter.

“We’ll be out here (Saturday) and Sunday,” Anderson said.

He said no structures have been lost, though one residential structure was threatened.

County Road 105 resident Paula Montoya said the fire was burning south of her home.

“It just zipped across the canyon,” she said. “We’ve had brief storms this afternoon with a lot of lightning.”

Wildfires have also torched land south of Durango and in the Marvel area this month.
