Motorcyclist dies in crash on Coal Bank Pass

Rescue attempts ongoing Sunday evening

A motorcyclist died Sunday evening from injuries sustained in a crash on Coal Bank Pass on U.S. Highway 550.

Colorado State Patrol Cpt. Adrian Driscoll said John B. Demarest II appeared to have lost control of his motorcycle, resulting in a “single-vehicle accident” that occurred at mile marker 59 on the north side of Coal Bank Pass, just before Lime Creek.

Demarest, 60, was a resident of Durango. His next of kin has been notified.

Traffic was limited to alternating on one open lane for about one hour during response to the crash, Driscoll said.

This article has been updated to correct the spelling of John Demarest’s name.
