Three men rescued from Cascade Creek

3 men rescued from Cascade CreekRescue ‘went smooth’

Three men were rescued Monday evening after they became stuck in Cascade Creek earlier in the afternoon.

“I know they got them out with no injuries. I don’t know any other details,” said Butch Knowlton, director of the La Plata County Office of Emergency Management, on Monday night. “The guys came down late, and they said everything went smooth.”

Knowlton was not at the scene, but he said he got word of the rescue later in the day at a meeting.

Emergency responders headed out to rescue the men stuck in Cascade Creek on Monday afternoon.

They were stuck about a quarter of mile from U.S. Highway 550 near Cascade Village, said Zak Fleming, who was hiking and saw the men.

“They were just walking down the creek to jump the waterfalls,” he said.

Crews with La Plata County Search and Rescue, Durango Fire Protection District and San Juan County Search and Rescue were involved, Knowlton said.

Two men were on one side of the creek and one was on the opposite side, he said.

The series of waterfalls are popular jumping spots when water levels are lower.
