Skyhawks top student-athlete nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year

FLC outfielder nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year
Missy Fundora is up for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

After her senior season, Fort Lewis College softball player Missy Fundora graduated holding multiple school records and a long list of academic accolades. For her body of work, the NCAA has nominated Fundora for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

The Skyhawks’ star outfielder is among 517 nominees who compete in NCAA Divisions I, II and III. The award honors graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in academics, athletics, service and leadership.

“The nomination is an incredible honor,” Fundora said. “Being a student-athlete is so much more than just playing a sport. I am grateful for all of my supporters who have helped me get to where I am today.”

Fundora is certainly well-deserving of the nomination. She was awarded Fort Lewis’ Jan Wilson Hetzler Award for the 2015-2016 school year as the top female student-athlete at FLC. She is a three-time selection to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Academic team and was named RMAC softball’s Academic Player of the Year twice.

On the field, she holds all-time school records for at-bats, hits and doubles. This season, she hit .392 and led the team in games played (47), runs scored (38), doubles (16) and walks (18). She also started every game the team played this season.

“It takes a lot of work to balance academics, athletics, work, community service and all the extra-curricular activities,” she said. “But, I loved every minute of it.”

Fundora will join five other Skyhawks in Australia this summer for the Australian International Softball Challenge.
