Last year, 288 impaired drivers were arrested over the Fourth of July weekend, CDOT said.

“Impaired driving is an issue law enforcement has zero tolerance for,” Col. Scott Hernandez, chief of the Colorado State Patrol, said in the release. “Law enforcement agencies throughout the state will be out in force, cracking down on drunk driving. Expect to see sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols and increased vigilance in an effort to keep our roadways safe.”

In 2014, when July 4 was on a Friday, there were 66 alcohol-related crashes in Colorado, resulting in three deaths, CDOT said.

The special enforcement period this year runs through Tuesday.
