I wanted to chime in on the upcoming Olympics in Rio this August. Ever since I was a kid, I have looked forward to watching our country compete on the world stage. At first I was rooting for the U.S. to garner the most medals, but, as time went by, I focused more on the individual accomplishments of these athletes and the sacrifices they make to represent their country.
The ongoing revelations of polluted waterways and the utter disregard for cleaning up those cesspools is beyond me. Sometimes bidding countries bite off more than they can chew and find out – way too late – the money is just not there. I heard a proposal Wednesday that the International Olympic Committee should consider in these global economic times. Move the Olympics to semi-permanent sites in the future with venues already in place and just a few facelifts to make them shine. Let’s just hope our international golfers stay clear of the water hazards!
The Three Queens and a Honey Tournament will be held July 13th at Dalton Ranch. This is just one of the fun events of the season, and organizers want to get a firm grip on the number of teams competing. The Dalton Ranch Ladies Clinic “Sangria and Short Game” has been rescheduled for 4-5 p.m. July 12th. Check with the pro shop for sign up.
Mark July 16-17 on your calendar if you are a senior golfer 50-or-older as the CJ’s Diner/Durango Joe’s Coffee Men’s Senior Open will be contested at Hillcrest. This stroke-play event will feature full handicaps and is flighted accordingly. The entry fee is $50 per person with gross and net prizes awarded.
Down the road is the most prestigious regional event of the ladies golf season as the annual Tarpley RV of Durango Women’s Chili Pepper Challenge will return July 19th to Hillcrest. Check with the pro shop at 247-1499 to get you and your partner signed up.
