Talk about town: Ignacio High student scores silver at national conference

By the time she completed her project on sexual consent, Gabriana “Gabby” Creason had garnered a gold medal at the state level and now a silver medal at the national Family, Community and Career Leaders of America Conference.

Gabby, 16, presented her project, one of about 200 from around the country on the subject of advocacy, last week in San Diego. Her first time on an airplane and first time seeing the ocean, she also had the opportunity to visit the San Diego Zoo and watch the Fourth of July fireworks over the bay.

An anti-bullying workshop may morph into her project next year, although she’s also considering a Dude, Be Nice campaign, her adviser, Lynn Blakesley said.

“The climate (at the conference) was so well-behaved and responsible, and that was good for her to see,” Blakesley said. “Everyone was on time, no one used their phones during presentations and you didn’t hear any swear words. These kids give you hope for the world.”
