Fort Lewis College will add two former student-athletes to Hall of Fame

Former stars will be inducted on Homecoming weekend at Strater Hotel

The Fort Lewis College Hall of Fame will have two new inductees in October.

Former Skyhawks football player Matt Gutierrez and volleyball player Moreen (Baylis) Sawyer will be inducted in a ceremony Oct. 9 at the Strater Hotel.

Gutierrez is the most efficient quarterback in FLC history, and is fourth all-time in passing yards with 7,217 and racked up 63 touchdown passes in his career. The dual threat quarterback is also 27th all-time with 707 rushing yards at FLC and rushed for 15 touchdowns.

Gutierrez was named RMAC Quarterback of the Year in 2005 and made All-RMAC teams in 2005 and 2006. He was also voted as the team’s Most Valuable Player in 2006 and was selected to the FLC All-Century Team. He was also named Most Valuable Player in the Skyhawks’ first ever postseason win, a 24-14 win over Dixie State in the 2006 Dixie Rotary Bowl.

Sawyer was dominant for the Skyhawks from 2000-2003 on the volleyball court. She owns school records in total attempts (4,200) and attempts in a season with 1,392. She is second in school history with 1,338 kills, fifth in service aces (106) and fifth in digs (1,155). With 108 games played, she is 10th on the all-time list.

Sawyer was the team’s Most Valuable Player in three of the four seasons she played. She was named to the 2003 All-RMAC second team and RMAC honorable mention in 2001 and 2002.

The Oct. 9 Hall of Fame induction ceremony falls on Homecoming weekend. Two soccer games and a football game will be part of the weekend festivities.

The Fort Lewis women’s soccer team hosts Black Hills State at 12:30 p.m., Oct. 7, and the men will play Colorado State University-Pueblo at 3 p.m. On Oct. 8, the Skyhawks football team will face off against Western State Colorado University at 12 p.m.
